EDL Candid

These images which were all taken without asking the subjects who I have captured within them show photographs that the public usually see on the news. Because its what the media take photographs of, this is because they don't take the time to get involved with the EDL and ask for portraits. They just capture them from a far. This set of images focus highly on signage, and the mass of people.

The last two images show these three men with a huge sign, stating how they are non violent and what they are against. This allows the public to see exactly what they're trying to protect and also set the public straight on them being really violent.

This image is more what you expect to see from this event, skin heads swigging beers on the streets and singing loudly which usually includes racist comments, from my experience.

This is another one of my favourite from the event because it plays up to the stereotype the EDL supporters have, when this image is placed next to contrasting peaceful images of the event it will give a good story behind the different types of people that attend. Also I think this is a well captured image due to its timing and also positing, with the man swearing being the centre focus of the image.

In the last two images I made an effort to pull back from the crowd a little, to photograph the event from further away to show the viewer the scale of the crowd and also how many England flags and signs they have with them.

I focused this image on the media to show they all stand in one place and just document what they see from far away, meaning their images will never truly show how the EDL actually are. Hopefully for me doing portraits as well it will give the viewer a better representation of the group.

The EDL put this disabled kid at the front of their march which I think is a kind of publicity stunt to make the media focus on how everyone gets involved. Also I'm not sure why the kid is holding a sign saying labour party out when they are not actually in power. This photograph is another one of my favourites from the shoot.

Again this image shows the scale of the event and the media that have swarmed around it, the media never show images like this because it looks like they are receiving lots of support. And if the media show the support they are getting, it usually only increases, instead of this they make up a number of how many supporters there was which is always lower than reality.

This image works well to show the different signs and oppinions of the supporters while also showing the faces of the mass crowd. Which the viewer can take a while studying.

These images document the general feeling of the group as it paraded around the town of Dudley, on the actual day there was about 800 supporters who showed their face.

They all marched to a point in the town in which they had set up a stand for guest speakers to give interviews and also some music to greet the members after their walk. As you can see this image shows first lot of the EDL members arriving at this end point.

This is another one of my favourite photographs, which highlights the one subject who is flying the English flag with pride and in a gesture like he is enforcing onto the land.

Again this is another one of my favourite images as it shows the general feeling of the event after they stopped walking. It also captures many different faces and signs that the viewer can take a while to read and see the opinion in the hearts of the supporters.

This shows one of the guest speakers with his fist raised in a definitive manner while he is speaking about keeping England for the English and also why they are all here.

I really like the focus in this image because it shows great detail in a lot of the supporters faces, which makes the photograph look like there is a lot going on in it. If this was blown up large, a viewer could spend a while looking at all the different facial expressions on each individual face, which gives the viewer good insight into the general feeling of the event.

Again this is another image which I took a few steps back to show the scale of the march to the viewer to try and represent to them how many or how little supporters they had. Also all the white and red colours from the flags work really well in this image.

This last image is a candid shot I took of a guy wearing camouflage and a mask which a bank robber might use, which does portray to the public a very scary militant look about him. These kinds of people are what the media focus on because it makes the group look a lot scarier than it actually was, if you put this next to some of the portraits I put in my last post it would give you two very contrasting ideas.
